Hitchcock uses The Birds to build suspense by making sure to take his time. Hitchcock establishes Brenner and Daniels their relationship before they ever get married. Jessica Tandy, who played Brenner's mother Lydia and Suzanne Pleshette, as Annie his former lover, both have memorable role. The screenplay was created by popular writer Evan Hunter, better known as his nickname Ed McBain, from a novella written by Daphne Du Maurier. Hitchcock used electronic sound effects in lieu of musical scores to great effect. The bizarre real-life incident of herringwaters that smoked on Capitola, Calif., in 1961, believed to occur due to diatom poisoning in the digest of anchovies by the birds, causing extreme aggression, was studied by Hitchcock in preparation for the film.
